Placed under the protection of Queneau, it took the sixth novel by “the most gifted writer of his generation” for Modiano to be awarded the Prix Goncourt. The jury rewarded — a rare occurrence worth noting — the writer’s body of work as a whole, which by then appeared to reflect a constant impulse toward exorcism, or an ever-unsatisfied attempt at catharsis, centered on the “troubled and shameful period” that so haunted the author: the Occupation. A quest for identity, a search for origins, and an interrogation of memory.
