All volumes signed by George R. R. Martin.
Born in 1948 in Bayonne (the one in New Jersey, not the French city!), George R. R. Martin, now nicknamed the “American Tolkien,” began writing a fantasy cycle in the early 1990s that he titled A Song of Ice and Fire. The first volume, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996 and was followed by four further volumes, published between 1999 and 2011.
The saga’s renown began immediately upon publication: A Game of Thrones was awarded, in 1997, two of the most important prizes in fantasy literature, the Locus Award and the World Fantasy Award, and the two following volumes each repeated this feat for the Locus Award. Even Harry Potter did not do as well, winning the award only for The Prisoner of Azkaban.
In January 2007, the television network HBO acquired the adaptation rights, with episodes broadcast from April 2011, just as the final volume was published. George R. R. Martin took part in the production and wrote the screenplay for one episode in each of the first four seasons. The series enjoyed unprecedented success for a fantasy television show, with critics calling A Song of Ice and Fire “one of the best fantasy series ever written” (Denver Post). Translated into more than forty languages, it sold more than 90 million copies even before the films, which only increased these figures exponentially.
An exceptional complete set, in fine condition, with all volumes signed by the author on the half-title pages.
