Seventeen years before the publication of Madame Bovary, Flaubert had conceived this thinly disguised autobiographical short novel: it was published posthumously in 1901 under the title chosen by the young Flaubert, who was only twenty years old when he wrote it. The bibliophile and publisher Pierre Dauze acquired the manuscript and arranged for its serialized pre-publication in La Revue blanche at the end of 1900, followed by this book edition.
