Like L’Œuvre du divin Arétin and L’Œuvre du Marquis de Sade, which Apollinaire had already published with the same publisher, this “satirical and bawdy” anthology belongs to the series “Les Maîtres de l’Amour.” Apollinaire, under the pseudonym Germain Amplecas — a renowned scholar and historian in the eyes of the world, and a friend of Aphrodite behind closed doors — assembled pieces by, or attributed to, Barbey d’Aurevilly, Victor Hugo, Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Charles Monselet, Albert Glatigny, Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine.
A copy in perfect condition, without a trace of foxing, bearing Apollinaire’s two autograph signatures, revealing his pseudonym — on a copy picked up along the quays of Paris!
