It was drawn on the back of the title page of the album Sempé à New York, which brings together some of Sempé’s excellent drawings for The New Yorker.
Sempé, a keen cyclist, roamed the streets of the city on his yellow Motobécane super-touring bike, taking his drawings to the streets of Manhattan.
